Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, and Encarna Sanchez. She was a compulsive
performer as a child and would reenact TV commercials to keep the family
entertained. But she chose to devote her time to dance. After nine years of
ballet training at Spain's National Conservatory she was able to continue her
training under the tutelage of a number of famous dancers. She realized her
passion at the age of 15 when she topped 300 girls at an audition for an agency
that represented talent. She was then offered roles in Spanish music videos and
TV. This contract resulted in a variety of roles, opening the doors to a
successful career on the world of big screens. Cruz made her debut in a film in
The Greek Labyrinth (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth) She then made a brief
appearance in the Timothy Dalton thriller Framed (1992). Her final film was an
Oscar-winning film, Belle Epoque (1992), where she was one of the four sisters
vying to win the heart of a handsome deserter from the Army. The film also won
numerous Goyas in Spain that is the Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards.
Cruz continued to add more films to her list of credits, growing by three to
four per year. Soon Cruz was the leading lady in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997)
(Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director
Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the
same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film
Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none
for Cruz). Her luck finally changed in 1998, when the film-industry comedy La
Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) was awarded the Best Actress Goya. Cruz has made a few
other attempts at English-language films, but her first international hit was
Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999), in which she played an unchaste , but
very well-meaning nun. Cruz became in high demand both on the Atlantic as well
as the west coast, since the film received numerous awards and accolades. The
next major film she worked on was Woman on Top (2000), an American comedy about
a chef with bewitching culinary skills and a severe case of motion sickness.
